New Zealand’s first sea rescue service began back in 1898 which then paved the way for today's Coastguard Federation. For generations, we have recognised the need for rescue services around our waters, and members of our community have stepped up to make it happen. Coastguard has developed with needs and technology and now operates 75 dedicated rescue vessels across the country. What hasn’t changed is the hearts of the people who operate them. Ordinary people doing extra-ordinary things, giving their time to their local communities, and working together to save lives at sea.

There is a role for everyone, whether it is fundraisers, radio operators, crew on the boats or governance / leadership / admin within the units: the whole point is that together we save lives at sea.
If any cog is missing, the machine cannot perform.
Whatever your strengths, whatever your interest, you can commit them to Coastguard and become part of the team for your community.
Reliable, committed, ready to learn, team spirited, motivated, humble. Yes, we mean all of them. Being a Coastguard volunteer is definitely a team sport, requiring huge dedication and hours of training. Depending on your role, our volunteers can averaging 30-40 hours a month to fulfil their own personal development and their duties. There is little glory, but knowing just one person is home with their family as a result of your team is why we work so hard.
